Some teeth are more complicated to remove than a straightforward extraction. Impacted, broken, or deeply rooted teeth, and teeth close to nerves or sinuses, often need a more careful surgical approach and take longer to remove.

At Perth Sleep Dentistry, complex extractions are one of our core procedures. We offer IV sedation and general anaesthetic options specifically because many complex extractions are more comfortable, and safer, when a patient is fully relaxed or asleep.

What makes an extraction “complex”?

An extraction is generally considered complex if it involves:

• A tooth that is impacted and unable to fully erupt through the gum
• A curved, fused or unusually shaped tooth root
• A tooth that has broken below the gum line
• A tooth close to a nerve, sinus, or another tooth root
• Significant bone removal or sectioning of the tooth
• Extensive decay that has weakened the surrounding tooth structure

If a straightforward extraction turns out to be more involved once treatment begins, our dentists are experienced in managing this and will always explain your options before proceeding.

Why sedation matters for complex extractions

Complex extractions can take longer and involve more manipulation of the tooth and surrounding bone. This can mean more pressure, more noise, and a longer appointment than a simple extraction.

We offer three levels of sedation to suit the complexity of your extraction and your own level of anxiety:

Local anaesthetic (with laughing gas or Penthrox): suitable for many complex extractions where you want to remain conscious but comfortable.

IV Sedation (Sleep Dentistry): you are in a deep, relaxed “sleep-like” state and will have no memory of the procedure, while still breathing on your own.

General Anaesthetic (in hospital): for the most complex cases, or where you would prefer to be fully unconscious, we can arrange treatment at St John of God Private Hospital Midland or Waikiki Private Hospital.

When we refer to an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon

Most complex extractions can be safely and comfortably managed at Perth Sleep Dentistry. In rarer cases, where a tooth carries a higher than normal surgical risk, we will refer you to a specialist Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon and help coordinate your ongoing care.

What does a complex extraction cost?

Complex extraction fees depend on the difficulty of the tooth and whether sedation is required:

• Complex Extraction (item 314 or 322): $250 to $275
• Surgical Extraction (item 324): $406
• Treatment under IV Sedation (items 949 and 927): $350

If you have private health insurance with hospital cover, treatment under general anaesthetic at St John of God Midland is gap free for the hospital stay, with only a small gap on the anaesthetist (gap free with HBF).
