For some patients, having teeth removed in a dental chair simply isn’t an option, whether because of severe dental anxiety, the number or complexity of teeth involved, a medical condition, or additional needs. In these situations, treatment under general anaesthetic in hospital is often the safest and most comfortable choice.

Who is general anaesthetic treatment suitable for?

Hospital extractions under general anaesthetic are often recommended for:

• Patients with severe dental anxiety or phobia who cannot manage treatment while conscious, even with sedation
• Patients needing multiple or extensive extractions completed in a single sitting
• Children requiring extensive dental treatment who cannot cooperate with in-chair procedures
• Patients with physical or intellectual disabilities or additional needs
• Patients with certain medical conditions where being fully unconscious and monitored is the safer option

How it works

You will first have a consultation with one of our dentists to assess your teeth and discuss whether treatment under general anaesthetic is appropriate. We will also arrange a pre-admission assessment with the anaesthetist.

On the day, treatment takes place as day surgery at the hospital. You will be unconscious throughout the procedure, so you won’t feel or remember anything, and our dentists can complete all the required extractions in one visit.

Most patients go home the same day once they have recovered from the anaesthetic, and you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you afterwards.

What does treatment cost?

If you have private health insurance with hospital cover, your hospital stay is gap free through our agreement with St John of God Midland. There is a $300 gap on the anaesthetist’s fee, which is also gap free if you’re with HBF. You will only need to cover the excess on your policy (if any) and the gap on your dental treatment after your health fund rebate.

If you don’t have hospital cover, the hospital and anaesthetic costs are approximately $3,600, in addition to the dental extraction fees. We’ll always give you a clear, itemised quote before you commit to treatment.

Dr Murray Jacobs has been practising in Perth since 1985 and holds a Diploma in Anaesthetics from the Faculty of Anaesthetists, Royal College of Surgeons of England, alongside his Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. He is known for his calm, reassuring approach with anxious patients.
