If you’re due to have your wisdom teeth removed, one of the most common questions we get asked is simple: how long will I be out of action for? The honest answer is that it depends on how straightforward, or complex, your extraction is, and which type of sedation you choose. Here’s what to expect.

The first 24 to 48 hours

The first day or two is when swelling, discomfort and some bleeding are most noticeable. Most patients take this time off work or study, rest at home, and stick to soft or cold foods. If you had IV sedation or a general anaesthetic, you will also need someone with you for the rest of the day, and you can’t drive for 24 hours.

Days 3 to 7

Swelling and bruising typically peak around day 2 or 3, then gradually settle. Most people feel comfortable returning to work, school or normal light activity somewhere between 3 and 7 days, though this varies depending on how many teeth were removed and whether they were impacted.

Full healing

While you’ll feel mostly back to normal within a week, complete healing of the gum and bone at the extraction site can take several weeks to a few months. This doesn’t stop you getting on with life, it just means the area is still settling in the background.

What affects your recovery time?

  • Whether your wisdom teeth were impacted or fully erupted
  • How many teeth were removed in the one appointment
  • Whether the extraction was simple, complex, or surgical
  • How closely you follow your aftercare instructions
  • Your individual healing rate and general health

Tips for a smoother recovery

  • Stick to soft, cool foods for the first few days and avoid using a straw
  • Use an ice pack on your cheek for the first 24 hours to help with swelling
  • Take pain relief as prescribed, and rest as much as you can for the first couple of days
  • Avoid smoking, alcohol and vigorous exercise for at least a few days

If you’re anxious about the procedure itself, choosing IV sedation or a general anaesthetic won’t change your recovery timeline, but it can make the experience far more comfortable.
