You’ll be admitted and cared for by the hospital’s nursing team, with your procedure monitored throughout by our anaesthetist, Dr Murray Jacobs, before you recover and head home.

How to prepare for your hospital visit

Before you arrive

Waikiki Private Hospital will text you the day before your admission with your exact arrival time. As a general guide:

• Do not eat or drink for at least 6 hours before a general anaesthetic or IV sedation, unless your anaesthetist advises otherwise
• Shower or bathe before you arrive, and wear comfortable, loose clothing
• Remove nail polish, make-up and jewellery
• Leave valuables at home, and arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours

What to bring

• Your health fund membership details
• Medicare card and any relevant referrals or x-rays
• A list of your current medications
• Glasses, contact lenses or hearing aids if you use them

Going home

For day-only procedures under general anaesthetic or IV sedation, you’ll usually go home a couple of hours after your procedure, once you’ve recovered. A responsible adult needs to stay with you for the first 24 hours, and in that time you should not drive, drink alcohol, operate machinery, or sign any legal documents.
