We offer 3 different forms of sedation for kids; Laughing gas, IV Sedation* and general anaesthetic, to try and cater for all situations and budgets
The three options above are all quite different, so below is an explanation of each, however as always if you would like more information please call our friendly staff on 6118 2616
Laughing Gas
Laughing gas is a safe and effective sedative gas that is delivered through a small mask placed over the nose
The effects only last as long as the mask is on and wear off immediately after. When administered properly there are no major side effects and minimal recovery time. It is safe for use on all kids
The patient is completely conscious during this procedure. The gas purely intended to put the patient in a “relaxed” state and to reduce anxiety in some people
IV Sedation, also referred to as “Sleep Dentistry”, is a method where a sedative drug is administered via an injection to put you in a sleep-like state.
This is only available to kids over 10 years old, or what is deemed appropriate by the dentist and anaesthetist
The difference between IV Sedation and treatment under a general anaesthetic is that the patient is not actually “unconscious”, however in a highly relaxed, sleep-like state.
The patient will not be aware of what is happening during the procedure nor will they remember anything. They will feel as if no time has passed
You can use the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, where eligible, for the dental treatment itself. We are not able to bulk bill under IV Sedation, however it can still be used. Also the schedule will not fund the cost of the IV Sedation though
General Anaesthetic in Hospital
Under a general anaesthetic the patient will be unconscious for the entirety of the procedure, in many cases they will intubated to assist with breathing
The patient will not be aware of what is happening during the procedure nor will they remember anything. They will feel as if no time has passed
You will have NO out-of-pocket cost for the hospital stay or the anaesthetist if you have hospital cover on your private health insurance. Therefore, you will only have a gap on the dental treatment.
Child Dental Benefits Schedule will not fund any treatment under a general anaesthetic, this is not our policy but in fact a part of the funding rules handed down by Medicare
